Sintered Samarium Cobalt magnetic materials, unlike common commercial materials that have ASTM classifications, are difficult to manufacture and fabricate and present a special set of challenges. Therefore, the design team must take special care when creating a custom solution for your application. Common design challenges with SmCo Magnetic Materials include:
Are typically environmentally unstable (highly reactive and prone to oxidation). Common coating and plating solutions usually do not translate to magnetic alloy.
Will gain or lose magnetic field relative to the operational temperature fluctuations necessitating the need to design for magnetic performance through a temperature spectrum.
Can experience irreparable harm at extreme temperature exposures. This harm is irrecoverable and represents an effective partial or total demagnetization of the magnet.
Challenging to fabricate because conventional machine tools and machining methods are not feasible.
Challenging to design because the magnetic field density and resulting force are not linear relative to distance.

Sintered SmCo magnets, i.e. Sintered samarium cobalt magnets, are those permanent magnetic materials that based on a hexagonal crystal structure (1:5 type SmCo magnets) or a rhombohedral crystal structure (2:17 type SmCo magnets), and they are manufactured through a powder metallurgy process. They contain two basic elements samarium and cobalt. The samarium element can be substituted by a portion of other rare earth elements including praseodymium (Pr), cerium (Ce), gadolinium (Gd), erbium (Er), etc. the cobalt element can be substituted by a portion of iron (Fe) element to increase the magnets’ saturation magnetization (Ms). in order to control the microstructure and the microchemistry so as to meet required performance, it is also critical to add a small portion of copper (Cu), zirconium (Zr), titanium (Ti), etc.

SmCo magnets have better temperature stability. SmCo magnets can be operated at higher temperature up to 300°C, while Nd-Fe-B magnets can not stand temperature over 200°C. Two types of SmCo magnets are SmCo5 and Sm2Co17.

How to reduce eddy current losses of rare earth magnet?
The eddy current loss of rare earth magnet can be reduced by many ways, among them, the material science researchers have proposed to prepare the high-resistivity magnet, such as:
a. Bonded magnet.
b. High-resistivity sintered magnet.
Due to the existence of binder, the electrical resistance of the bonded magnet would be 102 to 104 times more than simple sintered magnet, but the motor power and maximum operating temperate will be limited. For sintered magnet, submicron fluoride will be served as additive to enhance the grain boundary electrical resistance.
